  • Lennox Teachers Association Opposes Charter School Effort to Leave District

The Lennox Teachers Association announced today [9/16/13] its opposition to a charter amendment submitted last week by Lennox Mathematics, Science, and Technology Academy (LMSTA) to become an independent entity no longer part of Lennox School District.  LMSTA is currently a dependent charter that has much autonomy but still remains a district school. The move came after recent turmoil around the current principal’s employment status and allegations of interference by District leadership in school matters.  Viewing the potential break-off as harmful to students, staff, and larger Lennox community, the Lennox Teachers Association Representative Council approved the following statement last week:

“We, the members of the Lennox Teachers Association, support our LMSTA teachers and families in their efforts to stand up for their students and school, but we would like to see more time devoted to this issue to explore alternative solutions to their concerns, including more autonomy for LMSTA within the district. We also recognize that this situation has largely come about due to poor leadership demonstrated by the School Board and undue interference by the district in the affairs of LMSTA.”

LTA president Brian Guerrero views the proposal as fraught with problems and unforeseen implications. “The plan to essentially secede from the district as a response to very recent issues is not in the best interest of the Lennox community, and, we believe, not in the best interest of LMSTA students or staff,” Guerrero said. “The school was never designed to be an independent charter and there are too many unknowns for us to support such a rushed plan. LTA will continue to support LMSTA’s efforts to operate as a Lennox charter with better support, not interference, from the District and to address the concerns of our LTA members at the site.”

  • 2013 LTA Elections – Results

    Hi everyone-

I would like to congratulate the following folks who were elected to LTA positions in last Tuesday and Wednesday’s election:

Vice President of Curricular Affairs (2nd Vice President)
    Justin Catalan

    Site Reps
    preschool – Maria Euyoque
Felton – Guadalupe Laguna & Martha Padilla
Huerta – Tam Premsrirath & Lisa Rubio
    Jefferson – Ann Chaffey
    Moffett – Erika Medina

We also have a number of write-in candidates for Site Rep positions at Buford (2 positions left), Jefferson (1), Moffett (1), LMS (2), LMS 7/8 (3), and LMSTA (2), as well as the 2 PAR Program joint committee spots.  Write-in candidates will be contacted in order of the number of votes they received (from most to least) and offered the positions for which they were written-in.  If two or more write-in candidates received the same number of votes, both/all will be offered the position, and if more tying write-in candidates accept a given position than there are positions available, a run-off election will need to be held between those write-in candidates who received an equal number of votes.  For example, at LMS6, four different people were nominated as write-ins for two positions; the top two received more votes than the next person, so the top two will be contacted and offered the position, and if they accept, we’re good.  But at Moffett, two write-ins received an equal number of votes, but there is only one position left; both will be offered the position, and if both accept, we’ll have to do a run-off election.  Make sense?  Ah, the joys of elections!  But it’s all worth it to get you your full representation on Rep Council and in the union.

    Have a great weekend,
    Brian Guerrero
    President, Lennox Teachers Association
